How do I record myself singing on an iPhone so it looks and sounds good?
In short
Face a window, put the phone at eye level, lock the focus and exposure,
and play the backing track out loud from a speaker behind the phone. Then record the song
more than once, from different spots — that is what turns a selfie video into something
that looks produced.
A reel camrip made from two takes of a song, and the same reel in the editor: one row per take, the lit tile is the take on screen.
Light
Stand facing a window or another big soft light. Light from behind turns you into a
silhouette.
Avoid mixing daylight with warm room lamps; your skin will change colour between
shots.
The phone
At eye level or slightly above, on a tripod or a stack of books — not in your hand.
Wipe the lens. It is the cheapest quality upgrade there is.
In the Camera app, touch and hold on your face to lock focus and exposure (AE/AF
Lock), so the picture does not pump when you move.
Turn on Do Not Disturb so a call does not end the take.
Film vertically for Reels, TikTok and Shorts.
Sound
Play the backing track from a speaker behind or beside the phone, loud enough for
you to sing to it, quieter than your voice.
Record in a room with soft things in it — curtains, a sofa — rather than an empty
room that echoes.
If you record several takes, the shared music in the background is what lets them be
lined up later.
Record it more than once
Sing the whole song two or three times and move the phone between takes: close up,
wide, from the side. One phone, three angles — see
how to film a music video with one camera.
Then add the takes to camrip: it lines them up by their sound and cuts
between them on the beat, with the lips staying on the words.
